Spring on the farm

Greetings farm friends and CSA members!

Julianna here- (newest Spring Tide team member!!)

Getting into the swing of farm life this past month has been such a pleasure, the brain is expanding with all the farm knowledge that Rebecca, Jessie, and Raphäelle are sharing with me, and the muscles are growing from the compost being shoveled and the posts being pounded!

The month of May on the farm has giv

en us a healthy variety of hot days, down pours, black fly black outs, and wild winds to keep us and the plants on our toes! While chillier temperatures have slowed some of the plant babies down, they are looking happy and healthy and ready to flourish as we head into a steady supply of warmer days just in time for the market and our CSA program!

This month we also had the honour of hosting an Agroecology Brigade with the National Farmers Union and Organización Boricua, it was fun week full of important conversations about the political nature of farming and food sovereignty, many hands making light work of big farm jobs, tick checks, and icy ocean dips for the bravest in our number.

As a newbie farmer, spending days outside and in the fields has opened my eyes to the excitement of springtime. It  has been so fun to see how nature changes for us every day. Farming seems to slow everything down- we are watching these guys grow in real time! What a treat! And also, what a nail biter (the anticipation!!). As much as I’m tapping my foot thinking about summer tomatoes (who isn’t), the slow and steadiness of spring is reminding me to enjoy the gifts of each season! Let’s give some love to the lettuce mix, the sprouting broccoli, and the radishes. They’re putting in the real work as we head into harvest season!

All of us on the Spring Tide team are so excited to ride the waves of this season and enjoy the bounty of veg and flowers with you- groundhogs, porcupines, heatwaves, windstorms, ticks and all!

A huge thank you to our CSA members, the wind beneath our wings! We can’t wait see you at pickups and chat veg!

Happy June!

Julianna
