It's that time of year, our annual garlic harvest party! Join us at the farm on Monday July 29 from 9am-12pm to help us pull and hang our garlic. We'll have a little farm tour, refreshments, and a potluck lunch to follow. All are welcome - please RSVP to our email springtide.organics@gmail.com if you'd like to attend. We hope to see you there!
We look forward to harvesting garlic with friends and family every year. Not only does it speed along a lengthy task, which we much appreciate, but it also provides an opportunity for folks to see the farm in it's full summer glory. It's so important for us to share this land that we steward with community and what better way than over a meal. As we approach peak summer on the farm (tall weeds, dry soil, daily harvests, and long hot days), we relish in any opportunity that offers us a fresh perspective on our work. It's amazing to see the farm through someone else's eyes in order to really appreciate how much hard work it takes to do what we do.
As you've noticed in your CSA baskets and at the farmer's markets lately, everyone is selling garlic scapes. These are the flowering tips that grow through the centre of the garlic plant. If left alone, they will flower and go to seed. We pluck them off because we want the cloves to size up as much as possible, so we want the plant's energy to focus on that and not on flowering. The scapes are a fan favourite at this time of year - crunchy and lightly garlicky. They're great in salad dressings or on the bbq. My favourite way to use them is in pesto. Toss them in a food processor with basil ( or your preferred herb), some walnuts, lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper and you'll end up with a fantastic pesto! They also freeze super well if you're overwhelmed with other summer veg at the moment.
